Engadin: the cradle of winter tourism In the beginning there was the bet made in 1864 by Johannes Badrutt, a local hotel owner and pioneer. In order to fill his hotel with guests also in the wintertime, he invited a group of Englishmen to St. Moritz for Christmas. He guaranteed them a good time, or there would be no charge. These English stayed until Easter, paid their bill - and winter tourism was born. Still today, visitors are awestruck by the majestic alpine landscape with its pine forests, sparkling mountain air, pristine lakes, and exquisite light, as well as the seemingly endless sports and leisure time activities, and the lure of the luxury Grand Hotels from the turn of the century. There is something here for everyone. Am Anfang stand die Wette des Hotelpioniers Johannes Badrutt aus dem Jahre 1864. Um seine Pension auch im Winter zu füllen, lud er eine Gruppe Engländer über Weihnachten nach St.Moritz ein. Er würde ihren Aufenthalt bezahlen, falls es ihnen nicht gefiele. Die Engländer blieben bis Ostern - der Wintertourismus war geboren. Die weite Seenlandschaft mit den ausgedehnten Lärchen-Arven-Wäldern, das prickelnde hochalpine Reizklima, das spezielle Licht, die schier unbegrenzten Sport- und Freizeit-möglichkeiten und der Reiz der glamourösen Grandhotels aus der Jahrhundertwende üben noch heute grosse Faszination auf seine Besucher aus und haben für die verschiedensten Interessen etwas zu bieten. L'inizio fu la scommessa di Johannes Badrutt, un albergatore pionere, nel 1864. Allo scopo di riempire la sua pensione anche nella stagione invernale invitò un gruppo di inglesi a St. Moritz per Natale. Avrebbe rimborsato loro i costi delle camere, qualora non avessero trascorso delle piacevoli vacanze. Gli inglesi rimasero sino a Pasqua: era nato il turismo invernale. Il paesaggio lacustre nella sua vastità, le ampie distese di larici e pini cembri, il clima alpino, stimolante nella sua purezza, la luce speciale, le illimitate possibilità di praticare sport e attività nel tempo libero, uniti all'atmosfera magica dei Grand Hotels, esercitano ancora oggi un fascino indiscutibile sui visitatori, offrendo risposte adeguate agli interessi più diversi. |
